China sends several warplanes, navy ships toward Taiwan after U.S.-China talks

Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense announced on Saturday that in addition to warships, more than 30 Chinese military aircraft were heading to the island.

Thirty-three aircraft from the People’s Liberation Army were dispatched between 6 a.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday, officials said. The aircraft included SU-30 fighters.

Six Chinese naval vessels were also heading towards Taiwan, and 13 Chinese military jets passed through the median strip of the Taiwan Strait. According to the Associated Press, Taiwanese authorities are currently monitoring the situation.

Saturday’s incident came shortly after U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi agreed to meet in Bangkok. Sullivan announced the end of talks on X Saturday evening.

“I just finished a two-day meeting with Secretary Wang Yi in Bangkok to follow up on the Woodside Summit between President Biden and President Xi last November,” the post said, adding that Sullivan and It also included a photo of Wang Yi shaking hands.

National Security Council spokesman Adrian Watson said the meeting between Mr. Sullivan and Mr. Wang “continues both parties’ commitment to maintain strategic communications and responsibly manage the relationship.”

The Chinese government on Thursday accused the US Navy of sailing a warship through the Taiwan Strait and accused the US of provoking “trouble and provocation under China’s nose.”

On January 17, Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense announced in an English-language press release that it had discovered “18 sorties of various main and auxiliary Chinese Communist Party aircraft.” Eleven of the sorties crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait.

“The military closely monitored the situation using a combination of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and deployed mission aircraft, warships and land-based missile systems to respond appropriately,” the statement said.

“The Ministry of National Defense stressed that the security and prosperity of the Taiwan Strait is a matter of concern for global development and stability, and is the duty and responsibility of all parties in the region to work together,” it added. . “The Armed Forces will continue to strengthen its self-defense capabilities to address regional threats based on enemy threats and self-defense needs.”
