Chinese officials seem to be easing their stance on trade discussions amid President Trump’s ongoing tariff conflict, but they’ve emphasized that any negotiations should be based on “integrity.”
A spokesperson from the Chinese Commerce Department mentioned, “We’ve seen that senior US leaders are open to discussions about tariffs.” They noted that recently, the US has initiated a plan to share information with China through relevant channels, expressing a desire to engage in talks. In this context, China is currently assessing the situation.
Beijing has consistently resisted as the Trump administration imposed a hefty 125% tariff on goods, adding to an existing 20% import tax. In retaliation, China matched that with its own 125% tariff on American products.
A provincial spokesperson highlighted, “China’s stance remains firm—we will continue to resist. The doors to discussion are open, but it’s important to remember that the US sparked these trade wars unilaterally.” They insisted that if the US is serious about talks, it must demonstrate sincerity in the negotiations, including removing the current tariffs.
In recent weeks, Chinese leadership has criticized Trump’s fluctuating trade policies. Last month, the president announced a 90-day pause on tariffs for most foreign trade partners, making an exception for China. This decision has unsettled both global and domestic markets, raising fears of a US recession and creating uncertainty for investors.
As one of America’s largest trading partners, China warned that failure to adjust course could “further undermine” trust between the two economic giants.
A representative from the Commerce Department remarked, “In China, you can’t simply make one statement while acting contrary, all while trying to mask intimidation as dialogue.”
Beyond public communications, Beijing has indicated that Trump’s trade policies may breach World Trade Organization standards and has plans to report any violations.
