Chinese energy and automotive giant BYD has announced an ultra-fast EV charging system that says it's almost as fast as it's pumping.
China's largest EV maker, BYD, said Monday that it can provide a full charge to its latest EV within 5-8 minutes, similar to the time required for the Flash Charger to fill the fuel tank.
More than 4,000 new charging stations are planned to be built across China.
Charging time and limited range have been the main factors that Chinese drivers have, but have been limiting the switch from gas and diesel vehicles to EVs I accepted the changeLast year, sales of battery-powered and hybrid vehicles jumped by 40%.
BYD news appeared to shock Tesla on Tuesday as the EV maker's share price rose more than 3%.
BYD, short for Build Your Dreams, has started pre-sale for upgraded versions of previous models, the Han L and Tang L models.
Chinese companies have begun manufacturing batteries and are building an automotive empire while improving battery and energy storage technology. Expanding outside China.
The 1 megawatt flash charger says it can deliver nearly 250 miles of power in five minutes.
Ultra-high voltages and large currents are needed to maximize charging speeds, BYD founder Wang Chuanfu said in a statement.
“To fully resolve user concerns about charging, our pursuit is to make the charging time of the EVs as short as the refueling time of the fueled vehicle,” Wang said.
The company also said the flash charging system relies on carbide power chips with voltage levels up to 1,500V. Industry analyst Michael Dunn in a recent report said its blade phosphate phosphate battery is perhaps the safest and most efficient EV battery in the world, and Tesla has chosen to use it on several EVs.
BYD reported that it had created 4.3 million “new energy vehicles” last year. This is an up 41% from the previous year, including 1.8 million battery electric vehicles and 2.5 million plug-in hybrids.
The prices of stocks traded in Shenzhen's Chinese small markets have skyrocketed nearly 50% in the past six months.
BYD's most delicious latest premium model is expected to sell for up to $40,000, but it will be much cheaper EVs including SeagullIt is sold in China for around $12,000.
Byd narrowly tweaked Tesla ahead of its Tesla in 2024 with battery-powered EV production, to 1,777,965 compared to 1,773,443.
In early January, Tesla said its sales fell for the first time in over 12 years in 2024 as rivals such as BMW, Volkswagen and BYD gained market share in competitive EVs.
But BYD also has weaknesses, Dunne said JD Power's 2024 initial quality study of China's new energy vehicle, ranked BYD seals and BYD songs and battery electric at the bottom of the rankings.
