Chinese Communist Media Praise Eileen Gu for Criticizing Trump at the Olympics

American Skier Irene Gu Draws Attention in China

Chinese state media is quite intrigued by American-born freestyle skier and gold medalist Irene Gu. There seems to be a broader conversation around the U.S. representation at the Olympics, especially concerning views on communist governance.

Chinese media was taken aback when Gu responded to comments made by former President Donald Trump, who criticized fellow freestyle skier Hunter Hess for his anti-American remarks to the media.

The exchange began when Hess expressed his discontent on Friday, mentioning that he wasn’t exactly enthusiastic about the federal government’s immigration enforcement. This made donning Team USA gear, in his words, “a little difficult.”

Hess stated, “Just because I’m flying the flag doesn’t mean I represent everything that’s going on in the United States.” His comments led to calls for his removal from the U.S. Olympic team.

Trump quickly chimed in, labeling Hess a “true loser” and claiming he wasn’t representing his country effectively at the Winter Olympics. “If that’s the case, he shouldn’t have tried out for the team,” Trump added. “It’s tough to support a player like this.”

When asked for her thoughts on the back-and-forth, Gu expressed regret that this sort of controversy overshadows the spirit of the Olympics. She emphasized, “The essence of sport is to bring people together. It’s amazing how, through sport, we can literally break human limits.”

However, Gu’s criticism could also be viewed as a gentle rebuke of Hess, considering he injected domestic political discord into Olympic discussions.

The state-owned Global Times noted that the Chinese Communist Party often seeks to exploit social divisions within the U.S. The media’s focus on immigration issues alongside the Olympics resonates with many. Reports have surfaced expressing athletes’ anger about the ongoing immigration crackdown in the U.S., a situation exacerbated by recent violent events.

Hess’ teammate, Chris Lillis, expressed similar feelings, noting the reluctance of athletes to voice political opinions publicly, while voicing his own heartbreak over events in the U.S.

In the midst of this conflict between Trump and Hess, snowboarder Bee Kim showed her support for Hess, advocating for athletes’ rights to share their views. “We need to lead with love and compassion,” she said, pushing for a more empathetic approach.

A point of irony in this situation is China’s strict immigration policies. Any criticism of these policies by Chinese athletes could lead to severe repercussions, including imprisonment. A notable case involves tennis star Peng Shuai, who faced repercussions after accusing a government official of serious misconduct. She has remained largely silent since, which raises questions about the broader implications of free speech in sports.
