Chinese consul issues threat against Japan's PM regarding Taiwan remarks

China’s consul general in Japan issued a stark warning to the newly appointed Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi over her pro-Taiwan remarks, stirring tensions between the two nations.

Takaichi, who took office just last month, expressed during a parliamentary committee meeting that a blockade of Taiwan by China could lead to an “existential crisis” for Japan, suggesting that the country’s Self-Defense Forces might need to be deployed. Taiwan is notably close, at only 90 miles from Japan.

Xue Jian, the Chinese consul general in Osaka, made a provocative statement in a now-deleted post, saying, “That dirty head that barged in without permission – I have no choice but to cut it off without a moment’s hesitation. Are you prepared for that?”

This comment drew sharp criticism from the Japanese government. Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara labeled the statement “extremely inappropriate” and confirmed that Japan had lodged a formal protest with China. He pointed out that Xue has previously made inflammatory comments and urged the Chinese authorities to take action.

In a subsequent response, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian defended Xue, claiming his comments were a reaction to what he called Takaichi’s “unjust and dangerous” misrepresentation of China’s stance on Taiwan. Lin also accused Japan of a historical lack of accountability regarding its past actions.

Takaichi clarified later that her comments about Taiwan were merely a “hypothesis,” and she signaled a desire to avoid similar statements in the future.

This episode highlights the escalating strain in relations between China’s government and Japan’s new administration. Takaichi, known for her hawkish approach and strong ties with the United States, is looking to bolster Japan’s defense capabilities, which have been relatively stagnant, and enhance cooperation, especially in the context of Taiwan.

U.S. defense officials have repeatedly asserted that Japan’s involvement is crucial in any potential conflict arising from Taiwan, which China claims as its territory.

Kihara acknowledged the ambiguity in Xue’s comments but firmly stated they were highly inappropriate, reiterating Japan’s call for China to respond adequately.

The situation remains delicate, and it seems both sides may need to tread carefully going forward.
