Chinese Man Detained for Pretending to Be US Marshal to Defraud Woman

Arrests Made in $98,000 Fraud Scheme

Authorities took action on Wednesday in Flushing, New York, arresting individuals involved in a scam targeting a local woman. The operation unfolded when she received a call from people impersonating a former U.S. man, who claimed she owed them money.

The sheriff’s office reported that 29-year-old Liqing Chi was arrested on felony charges of attempted grand larceny. According to detectives, the victim was led to believe she had financial obligations to the callers.

Upon realizing something was amiss, the woman contacted law enforcement. She informed them that she had encountered the suspect at a business in Canton.

Officers detained Chi at the scene and he was arrested in the Canton town court. However, he was released before federal officials took him into custody, citing possible immigration violations.
