Chip and Joanna Gaines Endure Public Backlash Over LGBTQ Representation

Reality TV figures Chip and Joanna Gaines are navigating a public relations challenge as fans express discontent with the representation of LGBTQ couples in their latest project.

The couple’s show, “Back to Frontier,” broadcast on the Magnolia Network, has stirred controversy even before its release.

“It’s heartbreaking to see Chip and Joanna Gaines trade the cross of Christ for the LGBT rainbow flag,” one critic commented.

Among the couples featured are Texas residents Jason and Joe Hanna-Riggs, a same-sex couple who are raising two children. The show invites participants to experience family life as it was during the frontier days.

Evangelist Franklin Graham voiced his disappointment about the show on social media, saying, “I hope this isn’t true. If it is, it’s very disappointing. We love people, but we need to tell them the truth of God’s Word, which defines marriage as between one man and one woman.”

Graham has faced backlash himself, as many European venues canceled speaking events due to his stance on same-sex relationships.

Ed Vitagliano, Vice President of the American Family Association, also criticized the Gaines, stating, “This is troubling because Chip and Joanna have been influential in the evangelical community. In the past, they’ve upheld the sanctity of marriage.” He questioned their shift in focus toward promoting a non-biblical view of sexuality.

In response to the criticism, Chip Gaines defended the decision to include same-sex couples on social media. He urged followers to engage in conversations and reflect on modern American Christian culture, stating, “It’s a sad day when so-called ‘non-believers’ face animosity simply for being introduced to contemporary Christians.”

The backlash on social platforms was significant, with many Christian users expressing their distress. One commented, “As someone who saw Chip and Joanna as my spiritual guides, this is devastating.” Another added, “They appear to have chosen sin over obedience,” suggesting the couple needs to revisit biblical teachings.

On the opposing side, some criticized Christians for their reactions, pointing out, “The backlash against Chip and Joanna Gaines highlights that acting like Christ is a challenge for many Christians.”

In a prior incident, the Gaines faced criticism for contributing to a school board candidate opposed to critical race theory, drawing ire from liberal groups.
