Chip Roy Announces Candidacy for Texas Attorney General

On Thursday, Texas Congressman Chip Roy declared his intention to run for Texas Attorney General. This decision comes as he opts not to seek re-election to his current congressional seat and instead aims to succeed incumbent AG Ken Paxton, who is pursuing a Senate position.

In a campaign video, Roy shared his sentiments about Texas’s tradition of defending freedoms and communities, stating, “I’m not afraid to fight, not afraid to win, not afraid to protect Texas at every turn.” He plans to continue this legacy as Attorney General.

In a press release, Roy highlighted the challenges facing Texas, mentioning “cross-border politicians, radical leftists, and faceless foreign companies” that undermine the state’s sovereignty and security. He expressed a commitment to protect what he sees as God-given rights and the future of Texas.

Currently in his fourth term representing Texas’s 21st Congressional District, which includes parts of South Austin and North San Antonio, Roy previously worked as a U.S. Attorney Advisor and was involved in Ken Paxton’s early AG administration.

Roy took pride in his congressional service, noting that he embraced President Trump’s agenda as part of his efforts to “drain the swamp.” However, he feels compelled to return home after seeing the local impact of severe floods in the Hill Country, reinforcing his desire to serve Texas in a more direct capacity.

The upcoming Attorney General race marks Texas’s first open contest for the position since 2014, following Paxton’s decision to shift his focus toward a Senate challenge against John Cornyn.

Roy faces competition from notable figures, including Senators Maze Middleton and Joan Huffman, as well as Aaron Raitz, who is currently associated with Attorney General Pam Bondy’s Office of Legal Policy.
