While it’s possible Canty was misinformed by a producer, his statement was far from accurate. It’s worth noting that Chambliss did lead Ole Miss to victory over LSU, as well as Georgia in the previous year’s College Football Playoff. Yet, Ole Miss has experienced more success against ranked teams than just those two occasions.
Indeed, just last season, Ole Miss overcame No. 4 LSU with a 24-19 triumph, and in 2024, Jaxson Dart steered the Rebels past No. 3 Georgia. Looking back further, Ole Miss defeated No. 3 Alabama and No. 4 Mississippi State in 2016, and famously bested Alabama again when they were ranked second in the nation the following year.
In the last two decades alone, Ole Miss has taken down 16 teams ranked in the AP Top 10. While errors happen in commentary, Canty’s claim feels particularly egregious.
