Christie Supports Trump’s Crime Action in DC
Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie expressed his support for President Donald Trump’s decision to address crime in the nation’s capital. In a conversation with Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade, Christie mentioned that such action was long overdue.
“It’s a federal city, and I think the president is accountable for maintaining order. There’s a lack of accountability from Joe Biden,” Christie said during the interview.
He emphasized, “There is no reason for our country’s capital to be riddled with crime.”
Trump’s Commitment to a Safer Washington
On Monday, Trump announced plans to take control of the metropolitan police department to combat crime in Washington, D.C. This follows recent actions to bolster the National Guard and enhance the federal law enforcement presence in the area.
At a press conference, he stated that the deployment of the National Guard is essential “to restore law, order, and public safety” in the city, and that the metropolitan police department is under the jurisdiction of Attorney General Pam Bondy to help reduce crime.
Increased Federal Presence Following Violent Incidents
This initiative comes in response to violent incidents, including attacks against former government officials in Logan Circle earlier this month. Christie, a known Trump critic, called the situation “embarrassing” and expressed hope for the effectiveness of the President’s measures.
“We have people from all over the world wanting to visit Washington, D.C., the heart of democracy. It’s embarrassing for them to see the state of the city,” he commented. “I’m pleased that the president is taking action, as success will benefit residents and visitors alike.”
Christie also touched upon the upcoming New Jersey governor’s race, believing Republican Jack Chattarelli stands a “legal shot” against Democratic candidate Mikie Sherrill. He remarked, “People in New Jersey are quite fed up with the dominance of one party in the state.”
