Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (R) said former President Trump was taking refuge in his “greatest hits” by attacking Vice President Harris on race.
Mr. Christie ABC’s “This Week” “I think the president is going to be more aggressive in his response to the election and he’s going to be more vigilant about it,” Harris said.
“George, this is what’s happening. And this is how you see this race shifting, because when you feel that Donald Trump is in the lead, and he’s comfortably in the lead, you start to follow conventional, sensible political advice,” he said on “This Week” with George Stephanopoulos.
“Once the president feels victory is near, he reverts to his greatest hits. You saw it at the convention, you saw it at NABJ, you saw it last night in Atlanta,” he added.
During a heated exchange at the NABJ conference last week, President Trump questioned Harris’ identity, suggesting that she had only spoken about her Indian roots, and not her black roots. Harris is black and of Indian descent.
“I’ve known her indirectly for a long time. I don’t know her that much directly. She’s always been of Indian descent and she’s always touted her Indian descent,” Trump said when asked if he thought Harris became the Democratic nominee only because she’s black.
“I didn’t know she was black until a few years ago when she became black, and now she wants to be known as black,” he continued. “So I don’t know if she’s Indian or black.”
The White House said the former president had “come full circle” by attacking Ms Harris over her race and origins following her comments last week. Ms Harris has also faced attacks from the right over her work on diversity, equity and inclusion.
Trump continued to attack Harris at a campaign rally in Atlanta on Saturday, at one point calling her a “horror show.”
“I just want to say who she is. She’s a frightening being,” he said. “She’s going to destroy our country.”
