Chris Cuomo urges Democrats to avoid impeaching Trump

Cuomo Advises Democrats on Impeachment Strategy

On Tuesday’s episode of “The Chris Cuomo Project,” host Chris Cuomo cautioned Democrats against the idea of impeaching President Donald Trump if they regain Congressional control following the 2026 midterm elections.

Cuomo discussed a recent comment from Republican Senator Ted Cruz, who supposedly told Trump that if Republicans lost both the House and Senate, impeachments would occur “every week” for two years. Cuomo argued that pursuing impeachment isn’t worthwhile, as it wouldn’t lead to Trump’s removal and could be detrimental to the nation.

“Did you catch what Cruz allegedly said? ‘You’re going to lose your House seat, your Senate seat, and they’re going to impeach you every day.’ Honestly, I hope that doesn’t happen,” Cuomo remarked. “Why? Because you don’t have the votes to remove him.”

He continued, “Impeachment is a political process, okay? … You lack the necessary votes for removal. So, why go through with it? And if you have some noble ideas to propose, I’d like to see how they could possibly benefit the country.”

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has echoed a similar sentiment. During an interview with USA Today on December 15, she stated that Democrats should not focus on impeachment in the president’s final two years. “Impeachment isn’t something you just casually mention — ‘We’re going to do it.’ There needs to be a substantial reason,” she explained.

During her first term, Pelosi oversaw Trump’s impeachment on two occasions. The first was on December 18, 2019, for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress related to the phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. The second happened on January 13, 2021, for incitement of insurrection after the Capitol riots.

Moreover, Democratic Representative Al Green from Texas tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to introduce multiple impeachment articles against Trump during his second term. Democrats acknowledge that Trump engaged in conduct warranting impeachment, yet many have held back on formal commitments, considering the likelihood of Republicans retaining the Senate and the potential influence on upcoming election outcomes.
