Chris Hansen: 22 Years of Catching Predators
Investigative journalist Chris Hansen recently appeared on the podcast “Planet Tyrus,” discussing the alarming tactics predators use on platforms like Roblox. He emphasized issues like sextortion, corporate negligence, and the troubling nature of modern human trafficking, reflecting on over two decades of undercover work that spans from traditional settings to today’s digital spaces.
During the conversation, Hansen equated Roblox to an amusement park, warning parents about the risks: “It’s like kids jumping off rides.” He highlighted the site’s child-friendly visuals, which, featuring cartoon avatars, can often conceal serious dangers. “I was really surprised to see a children’s game with such innocent characters, akin to Lego figures. It just shows that wherever children gather, predators are likely to follow,” he remarked.
Roblox, a massive gaming entity with millions of young users, has faced numerous legal troubles. One significant lawsuit includes claims from over 140 individuals who argue that the platform’s design, which includes open chat and private spaces, facilitates predatory behavior.
Several state attorneys general have also taken action against the company, accusing it of prioritizing profits over the safety of its users. Hansen scrutinized the platform’s handling of allegations regarding child exploitation, noting that the current digital environment poses far greater risks than the early days of the Internet. He stated, “People often ask, ‘Is it worse now than it was 22 years ago?’ The clear answer is yes; the multitude of platforms available makes it easier for adults to approach children.”
A Roblox spokesperson, however, defended the company, claiming that “safety is at the core of everything we do.” They highlighted a “layered defense system” which includes technology and strict policies aimed at safeguarding young users.
Despite these assurances, Hansen feels there’s more responsibility on game developers to protect vulnerable children. He made an analogy: “If kids are jumping off amusement park rides, we have a duty to make those rides safer. Roblox bears a similar responsibility.”
While Roblox insists it has robust safety measures—like content moderation, parental controls, and age verification—the efficacy of these efforts continues to be debated. The company claims users now must verify their age to chat, which is designed to limit risky interactions. They assert, “We take immediate action against those violating our community standards and partner with law enforcement to hold offenders accountable. No system is without flaws, but our commitment to safety is ongoing.”
