Former MSNBC host and political analyst Chris Matthews said President Biden’s “elite” critics “are going to pay a price for that.”
Matthews appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Thursday to discuss Biden’s political future as a growing number of Democrats call for him to resign.
“Right now, Trump has the support of the poor, minorities and Hispanics, and he’s going to send workers and hold onto the Democratic base that’s going to be needed in November,” Matthews said.
“And I’ll say this: He’s going to make a comeback in October and people are going to end up rooting for him,” he added, “and he’s going to pay the price for this elite-esque attack on him.”
Matthews’ comments about Democratic elites turning against Biden came after several major donors, including actor George Clooney, reportedly said they would withhold funding from Biden’s campaign if he remained the nominee.
Political analysts said even those critical of the president’s reelection campaign would end up voting for him in the election.
Matthews also said Biden is more inclined to listen to first lady Jill Biden than someone like Clooney.
“Biden is going to be the little Democrat in this race, a true Democrat, and he’s going to get the public on his side come October,” Matthews said. “It’s going to be great. He’s not going to give up. He’s not going to give up.”
Matthews’ comments came the morning before Biden’s big news conference at the NATO summit in Washington on Thursday night, exactly two weeks after Biden’s poor performance in the debate sparked panic among Democrats.
At a press conference, Biden denied calls for him to give up on reelection.
