Sen. Chris Murphy Stirs Controversy with California Apappearance
WASHINGTON — It seems Connecticut is a distant thought for Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.).
On Saturday, he grabbed attention when he posed for a photo with Jimmy Kimmel in California and participated in the “No Kings” protests. The very next day, the Senate went into recess, yet security lines in some airports remained disrupted, with some closures still in effect.
Murphy shared a shot of himself on social media, exclaiming, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” He moderated an anti-Trump rally in Torrance, California, quite the distance from his Connecticut base.
“Look who I met at the No Kings rally in Torrance, California,” Murphy posted on X. He later added that he attended the rally and was pleased with the turnout.
Some East Coast Democrats, eyeing potential presidential runs in 2028, also engaged with Californians advocating for increased taxes on billionaires.
A notable point of contention is the proposed California Millionaire Tax Act, which has seen pushback from Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, who is also seen as a likely contender in 2028. This initiative suggests a one-time 5% tax on California residents with a net worth exceeding $1.1 billion and would apply retroactively to those living in the state since January 1 of this year.
Roughly 246 millionaires reside in California, as reported. Some billionaires have already left the state out of concerns regarding potential tax implications.
Murphy remarked on X, “Today in Los Angeles, we rallied with healthcare workers supporting California’s Billionaire Tax Initiative.” His emphasis was clear: “There’s no way to fix the damage from President Trump’s health care policies without asking the ultra-wealthy to contribute their fair share.”
Murphy seems dedicated to enhancing his progressive image, especially after clashing with Senate Democratic leaders over a Republican deal to prevent a government shutdown in March 2025.
Nevertheless, his unannounced trip to California didn’t go unnoticed online, drawing criticism from various users. Conservative commentator Stephen Miller questioned, “Why is a senator from Connecticut hanging out in Torrance, California?”
Another user pointedly asked, “Why would a senator from Connecticut go to a protest in Los Angeles?” while actor Dean Cain remarked, “This one writes itself.”
Some reactions were more favorable, too. Progressive followers praised Murphy, with one commenting, “Two of my favorite heroes!”
The newspaper reached out to Murphy’s office for clarification regarding his California visit.
It’s noteworthy that the Senate had entered a recess early Friday after passing a deal meant to fund the Department of Homeland Security, effectively ending a government shutdown that had started on February 14. House Republicans, however, expressed discontent, citing insufficient funds for Immigration and Customs Enforcement as well as Customs and Border Protection.
