Chris Richards Faces Uncertain Future Ahead of Conference League Final
The news regarding Chris Richards wasn’t the worst-case scenario for the U.S. men’s national team, but it certainly wasn’t great either.
After center back Chris Richards missed training on Thursday, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner informed the media that the player is dealing with a “torn ligament in his ankle” and his chances of playing in the upcoming Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano are “50-50.”
A representative from U.S. Soccer opted not to provide any details about Richards’ condition.
It’s worth noting that Richards sustained his injury during the second half of a recent match against Brentford but played through it before needing assistance off the field.
Aside from Christian Pulisic, losing Richards would be a significant blow for the U.S. team.
Richards is recognized as the most dependable American center back, and the team doesn’t have much depth in that position. If the U.S. deploys a back three, the likely companions for Richards would be Tim Ream and Mark McKenzie.
Should Richards be unable to participate, the team might consider Auston Trusty, Myles Robinson, or Tristan Blackmon as alternatives.
The idea of including Noakai Banks in the squad had been discussed for a potential March call-up, but his choice to decline, possibly to keep his options open with Germany, and a lack of playing time with Augsburg makes his selection seem very unlikely.
However, there is still hope for Richards. Crystal Palace has their final Premier League match against Arsenal on Sunday.
The U.S. roster will be revealed next Tuesday, just prior to the Conference League final against Palace. Meanwhile, the World Cup opener is set for June 12, with warm-up matches scheduled for April 31 and June 6.
