Tim Ream reveals the USMNT was in 'shock' following their World Cup defeat.

USMNT’s Reaction to World Cup Loss

It wasn’t disappointment. Not quite anger either. Just a sense of shock. That’s how Tim Ream, the captain of the U.S. men’s national team, described the team’s feelings after their World Cup exit against Belgium on July 6.

“It’s disbelief,” Ream mentioned during an appearance on ESPN’s “Pat McAfee Show.” He reflected on the team’s locker room atmosphere post-game, noting, “We were trying to piece together what happened because it was so contrary to how we had performed before.”

Coming into the match with high hopes after a previous win against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the USMNT made multiple critical errors, resulting in a 4-1 defeat to Belgium.

“The emotion in the room was shock. We were all trying to understand where this performance came from,” Ream added.

The players faced a wave of criticism for their poor showing, particularly Christian Pulisic, who didn’t manage to score throughout the tournament and exited the Round of 16 match early due to a right ankle injury. This decision drew ire, notably from former USWNT star Carli Lloyd.

Yet, Ream pointed out that Pulisic wasn’t solely to blame. “You mentioned Christian there, but honestly, none of us played our best game. It felt like everything that could go wrong did. It’s unfortunate because we all put in so much effort to reach this point,” he stated.

Despite their disappointing end, Ream believes that their journey has positively influenced the growth of soccer in the U.S. “One of the conversations we had as a group was about how we could inspire more people and foster a love for this game,” Ream shared. “We need to figure out how to get more folks passionate, involved, and contributing to the sport. And as players, we need to drive that change.”

“Ultimately, we have to perform and win games. Throughout the tournament, we felt the enthusiasm build. From that angle, I think we can take pride in our efforts and the victories we achieved.”
