Mad Dog is complaining about Magic Johnson.
Earlier this week on ESPN’s “First Take,” Chris Russo said he “loved” Johnson and listed off the many honors he received during his playing career, before slamming the former Lakers point guard for congratulating Bronny James on being drafted by the team.
“Magic seriously, are you going to tweet out right now congratulating Bronny James for being picked 55th by the Lakers? Why not do one for his dad too? That’s the only reason he’s on the team!” Mad Dog barked.
After his brother James was drafted in late June, Johnson I wrote to X“Congratulations to Bronny James on being drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers! This is a historic moment because LeBron and Bronny are the first father and son to play together in the NBA. Bronny playing for the @Lakers at Summer League in Las Vegas will be must-see TV!”
Russo didn’t have a problem with nepotism per se, but he rebelled against the idea that it was something to be celebrated.
“He didn’t get drafted by the Lakers because he did well at USC! He got drafted because his dad is LeBron. I understand nepotism goes on everywhere. Danny Hurley got his son into the University of Connecticut and nobody says anything. So, I get it,” Russo continued.
“But, man, can we just let it go? Stopping a whistle-stop tour to celebrate Bronny James being selected by the Lakers because we all know he would never have been selected 55th if his father had signed. I don’t know if they would have done that even if his father had signed.” [picked] The fact that he had free agency on the table to see if they were going to draft Bronny James was the biggest reason they drafted him in the first place.”
Bronny James signed a four-year contract worth up to $7.9 million with the Lakers, with the team holding an option for the final season of his contract.
