Parents of Murdered Texas Mother Speak Out

The parents of 38-year-old Christa Bauer Gilley, who was murdered, have made their first public statements since her tragic death.

Authorities are alleging that her husband, 39-year-old Lee Gilley, committed the crime. Christa, who was pregnant at the time, was discovered dead in their home in October 2024.

Lee Gilley reportedly cut off his ankle monitor and fled to Italy in May, just weeks before his trial was set to begin. This flight has raised concerns for his defense, according to his attorney, Dick DeGuerin, who mentioned that such an action could be interpreted as an indication of guilt.

In the meantime, Ed and Sharon Bauer, Christa’s parents, are anxiously awaiting updates on Gilley’s extradition. In an opinion piece shared in a publication, they expressed the ongoing pain and frustration over the lack of closure, stating, “We didn’t have time to grieve before legal battles began.”

The extradition process has faced its own complications. After being captured by Italian authorities, there were worries that Gilley might be released back into the U.S. where he could face the death penalty, which is not permissible under Italian law.

Despite their sorrow, the Bauers have taken a firm stance against the death penalty, saying, “We are Roman Catholic and believe in the sanctity of human life. We don’t believe justice for Christa involves taking another life. Our vision of justice is aimed at improving the lives of women and addressing violence against them globally.”

During a recent court appearance in Italy, a decision regarding Gilley’s extradition wasn’t reached, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the case. Meanwhile, a preliminary hearing for Gilley is scheduled, even as he remains overseas.

DeGuerin mentioned that Gilley maintains his innocence and attributes Christa’s death to a “pre-existing medical condition.” The Bauer family continues to push for justice, emphasizing that they seek accountability rather than vengeance.
