Christa Pike’s Case Still Haunts Former Police Chief

Over three decades after the brutal murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in Tennessee, former Knoxville Police Chief Phil Keith finds himself continually affected by the grim details of the case. He described the crime scene as “satanic,” and stated, “I’ll remember this case to the day I die.” Keith, who was the chief of police from 1988 to 2004, reflected on the profound impact the case left on him.

At the heart of this tragic story, three students from a vocational school—led by 18-year-old Christa Pike—enticed Slemmer under the guise of a trip to a music store to retrieve marijuana that was supposedly hidden in a park. What unfolded was horrifying.

Keith claimed, “She represents pure evil,” when discussing Pike. The group subjected Slemmer to relentless torture for nearly an hour, using beatings, lacerations, and even gags to silence her pleas for mercy. In a horrifying climax, they crushed her skull with a piece of broken asphalt. Pike, at the time of the crime and now aged 50, reportedly kept a piece of Slemmer’s skull as a morbid trophy, showing it off to peers prior to her arrest.

Details from the Trial

During the trial, an expert witness remarked on the “satanic elements” of the attack, suggesting that it stemmed from “collective aggression,” where groups can become dangerously stirred up and engage in extreme violence. A groundskeeper from the University of Tennessee testified that upon discovering Slemmer’s remains, he initially mistook them for an animal carcass until he saw clothing among the blood.

Keith reflected on the images from the crime scene, noting that they still linger vividly in his mind; he mentioned, “All I have to do is shut my eyes, and I can see everything.” He expressed regret that the police department at the time didn’t provide post-trauma therapy for its officers, which he believes could have helped them cope with the haunting memories they had to carry.

In a twist of fate, Pike was scheduled for execution recently. Though a brief stay was granted by the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Supreme Court later lifted it, allowing for her lethal injection. However, after two doses were administered, she survived and was left in critical condition, necessitating life support in an undisclosed hospital. Her attorneys reported that she remained unconscious and on a ventilator, explaining that the execution attempt caused severe injuries.

Uncertainty surrounds what might happen next for Pike. One of her attorneys, Randy Spivey, shared insights during a press briefing, highlighting that Slemmer’s mother was a prominent thought for Pike prior to her execution. He expressed empathy for both families, stating, “This is awful, and this kind of thing should never happen again.”
