McCaffrey’s Resurgence Fuels 49ers’ Hopes

San Francisco – Christian McCaffrey continues to establish himself as a dominating player on the field.

The standout running back for the San Francisco 49ers has been named an MVP finalist, a notable achievement as he’s the only player who isn’t a quarterback to reach this status. This recognition comes after he amassed 2,126 scrimmage yards and scored 17 touchdowns, marking his second nomination for Offensive Player of the Year within three years.

While this is usually expected, it comes after a challenging season in 2024 where McCaffrey missed 13 games due to Achilles tendonitis and a knee issue. This leads to quite a few “what ifs” surrounding his previous season.

“Last year was rough,” McCaffrey shared during an interview. “I worked really hard to get back to where I needed to be, and I feel incredibly grateful to be healthy and playing this season.” His focus on recovery and training seems to have paid off.

In an impressive feat, McCaffrey has become the second player ever to receive nominations for MVP, Offensive Player of the Year, and Comeback Player of the Year all in the same year. Additionally, he was recognized as one of the FedEx Air Force and Ground Athletes of the Year based on fan votes.

“Winning this award, voted on by fans, is really special. It’s one of the longest-running honors in the NFL, and I’m thankful,” he noted, highlighting that the award also contributed $15,000 to Feeding America, a local food bank in San Francisco.

Recently, McCaffrey was named Comeback Player of the Year, a nod to not only the setbacks he faced last year but also to his remarkable return to form. As he now approaches the age of 30, there were concerns about whether injuries signified a decline.

“Worry has been part of my mindset since high school,” he admitted. “It’s a motivation—it drives me to push harder. The key is to train continuously, which builds confidence. I trust in my preparation and feel good about where I am now.” It’s this mindset that keeps him focused.

Even as McCaffrey gears up for another season, it’s clear he is firmly on the right track after a season nearing 1,000 rushing yards. There’s a sense of optimism and determination that continues to surround him.
