Christian McCaffrey Receives NFL’s Salute to Service Award for 2026

Christian McCaffrey, the running back for the San Francisco 49ers, has been honored with the NFL’s 2026 Salute to Service Award, presented by USAA.

In 2021, McCaffrey established 23 and Troops, a foundation dedicated to addressing post-traumatic stress and providing athlete-level care to veterans. The initiative has successfully raised $700,000 to support military efforts and even compensated vacation time for 515 military families.

Growing up just half an hour from a military base, McCaffrey felt a strong connection to this community and knew he wanted to give back.

“From a young age, my parents taught me to respect the military and appreciate what it really means to live here,” McCaffrey shared. “I’m truly thankful for that perspective. Being in that environment, many of my role models were veterans. Learning from their experiences has deepened my appreciation for their sacrifices.”

He continued, “This is a tremendous honor. We’re playing games for a living, in front of millions, largely because of those who have sacrificed. It’s not just about the service members but also their families—spouses and children—facing challenges, often unnoticed. They don’t get the recognition they deserve.”

While developing his foundation, McCaffrey was taken aback to learn that 22 veterans take their own lives every day. “That’s why I’m doing this; I want to help reduce that figure,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb also showed his support by gifting Super Bowl tickets to 14-year veteran and Purple Heart recipient, SJ Fallin. “This means a lot to me. I have an uncle in the Air Force, so I understand the need for a strong support network,” Lamb stated.

This year’s award remains with the 49ers, having been previously awarded to George Kittle.

“Being around someone like George, who has incredible talent and a giving spirit, motivates you to want to make an impact too,” McCaffrey said.
