Christian Pulisic’s Decision to Skip Gold Cup Sparks Debate

The US soccer team’s debate over Christian Pulisic’s choice to miss the Gold Cup this summer has not lessened his resolve. In an interview with CBS Sports Golazo Network, he expressed no regrets about his decision, saying, “Please call it what you want.”

Pulisic also criticized those questioning his commitment to the national team, arguing it reflects a desire to “get out of the line.” This comment illustrates his frustration with the backlash surrounding his choice.

Several former players, including Landon Donovan, voiced disapproval of Pulisic’s decision. Donovan discussed the importance of representing one’s country, citing veterans like Cristiano Ronaldo who, despite being tired from a long season, still chose to play. He implied that some players, who might prefer leisure over competition, should reconsider their priorities.

Pulisic responded indirectly but firmly to such criticisms. He stated, “You can talk about my performance, but questioning my commitment is what crosses the line.” He expressed bewilderment at why former players would want to create divisions among fans during challenging moments.

Reflecting on his decision, Pulisic noted how his body began communicating with him towards the end of the season at AC Milan. “What’s the best thing to do for the World Cup coming next year?” he pondered. Extending his season with a busy Gold Cup schedule didn’t seem wise to him.

Despite his wish to play in two friendly matches with Türkiye and Switzerland ahead of the Gold Cup, Pulisic was informed by the national team’s staff that there would be a single roster encompassing both the friendlies and the Gold Cup. He stated, “I fully respect that,” though he didn’t agree with the rationale.

Pulisic admitted it stings to hear harsh words from former players, especially those he admired growing up. It’s tough to process criticism when it feels like there’s a broader agenda at play.

In his recent season, Pulisic scored 11 goals and provided nine assists in 34 matches for AC Milan. During the 2022 World Cup, he contributed one goal and two assists in four games for the team. In 2024, he managed one goal and one assist in three matches for Team USA.
