Packers-Panthers Game Highlights Injuries and Comeback
In Thursday night’s matchup between the Packers and Panthers, two players were injured on the same play, with one being transported to the hospital.
Fortunately, Christian Watson didn’t need medical attention for too long.
With just under ten minutes left in the second quarter during the Packers’ 27-19 victory, Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love launched a stunning 53-yard pass to Watson. He made the catch but was met with a hard hit from Panthers defensive backs Zakee Wheatley and Will Lee III at the Carolina 26-yard line.
Watson lay on the Lambeau Field turf, his chest facing upwards, while Lee, who was involved in the collision, was also down and clutching his left hamstring. Carolina’s medical staff assisted Lee off the field, and, unfortunately, he had to be carted away, not returning to the game.
Eventually, Watson managed to get back on his feet and was seen walking towards an ambulance in the tunnels of Lambeau. The Packers reported he was taken to a local hospital as a precaution due to a chest injury and was considered questionable to return to play.
However, a little over an hour later, shortly after the start of the second half, Watson returned to the stadium. He re-entered the game with under five minutes remaining in the third quarter, receiving a warm applause from the home crowd.
After the game, Watson reflected on his sudden hospital visit, mentioning that he hadn’t wanted to go. He had been spitting blood on the field, which prompted the medical team to check for any potential internal bleeding.
“I never wanted to go. I was hoping they would let me off. I said I was feeling better once I caught my breath,” Watson shared with Prime Video post-game. “I was just praying it was just good enough to where I could come back out here, and obviously thankfully it was.”
The Packers must be relieved to have Watson back, especially since they are already missing another wide receiver, Jayden Reed, who suffered a season-ending neck injury in Week 2 against the Jets.
During the game, Watson led the Packers in receiving at halftime with six catches for 100 yards, marking his third receiving game of over 100 yards this season. He added two more catches and 13 yards in the second half as the Packers improved to a record of 5-3.
