Christian author Philip Yancey, who has been married for over 50 years, recently admitted to having a lengthy affair, a revelation he shared with Christianity Today. He stated that he feels “disqualified” from ministry following this confession.
Without attempting to defend his actions, Yancey openly reflected on the gravity of his decisions and their painful impact. He said, “With great shame, I confess that for eight years I had a sinful affair with a married woman. My actions contradicted everything I believe about marriage. They were completely at odds with my faith and writings, bringing deep pain to her husband and our families. Out of respect, I won’t provide further details,” he explained.
Yancey continued, “I have confessed to God and my wife, and am seeking professional counseling and accountability. I have morally and spiritually failed, and I deeply mourn the hurt I’ve caused. I know my actions will disappoint readers who have relied on my work. Most painfully, I’ve dishonored God. I am filled with remorse and can only turn to His mercy and grace.”
He highlighted his commitment to rebuilding trust in his marriage of 55 years and expressed his intent to retire from writing, speaking, and social media following his disqualification from ministry. “I must now focus on living out the principles I’ve espoused,” he said in an email statement, adding that he prays for forgiveness and healing for everyone affected.
Janet Yancey, his wife, also shared a statement. She emphasized her commitment to their marriage despite the betrayal, asking for prayers for both of them. “I, Janet Yancey, speak from a place of trauma that only those who have faced betrayal can grasp. I made a sacred marriage vow years ago, and I have no intention of breaking it,” she stated.
Janet also conveyed her understanding of God’s forgiveness. “I accept that God has redeemed Philip and the world through Jesus. Despite my pain, I have found grace to forgive as well. Please pray for us,” she added.
Reflecting on their relationship, Yancey noted his wife’s unwavering support during challenging times, like when he faced a significant health crisis years ago. “She is displaying that same fierce loyalty now, even as caregiving may become a demanding role,” he mentioned in a recent piece about his Parkinson’s diagnosis.
