Christianity Today Rejects $10 Million Bid
Christianity Today has turned down a $10 million purchase offer from Canon Press. The interim president and CEO made it clear that the publication is not for sale and is firmly rooted in conservative evangelical thought.
The bid was made public on September 29th. Daily Wire Reporter Megan Basham shared a statement from Canon Press, expressing gratitude for Christianity Today and confidence in their ability to enhance its reach and maintain its legacy.
Canon Press, based in Moscow, Idaho, was founded by Douglas Wilson. In the offer letter, it was noted that the publishing industry is undergoing rapid transformations. “Canon Press has developed a platform well-suited for navigating this changing landscape,” the letter read, further referencing Charlie Kirk as a modern figure carrying the torch once held by Billy Graham.
Founded by Graham in 1956, Christianity Today was initially edited by Carl F. H. Henry. Basham argued that the publication had lost its original purpose and expressed hope for its restoration to Graham’s vision.
Thomas Addington, the interim president and CEO of Christianity Today, stated in a report that the publication is not for sale. “We recently received an unsolicited offer from a third party,” he said, emphasizing that Christianity Today is not up for grabs at any price.
Addington mentioned a $1 million contribution spread over four years from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, which has been under scrutiny. This funding is connected to issues around abortion. The allocation included $400,000 for general operational support and $200,000 specifically for reports on upcoming U.S. elections.
According to reports, the Hewlett Foundation adopts a hands-off approach and does not interfere with editing decisions. Addington reiterated that the funding does not influence Christianity Today’s editorial stance, stating, “We do not accept funds from those wanting to alter our beliefs.”
