During an appearance on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie remarked that President Donald Trump’s tariffs have caused the international community to view the U.S. as “an unreliable partner.”
Host George Stephanopoulos noted, “We’ve pinpointed tariffs as a critical issue. The release date is likely to be one of the most significant moments in the first 100 days. Is there a way for Donald Trump to navigate this?”
He went on to ask, “Can he engage in negotiations that minimize the fallout?”
Christie replied, “It really hinges on the specifics of those transactions, George. From what I’m seeing, the global perception is that we are an unreliable partner now. Trump has rejected this notion, but it’s impacting the bond market, and the concern is we might be entering a genuine economic downturn.”
He added, “Ultimately, we’re moving towards a situation that most economists and business leaders are anticipating—a rough patch we haven’t faced in a while, and it doesn’t seem to be under control.”
