Chris Christie Critiques GOP Support for Trump
Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie pointed out a notable contradiction among many Republicans regarding their public and private views on President Donald Trump. In a recent appearance on the “Overtime” segment of “Real Time with Bill Maher,” Christie shared insights about Republican sentiments, highlighting the duality of their praise and private criticism.
When asked by Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland about what Republicans discuss when they think no one is listening, Christie revealed that party members often approach him. They express admiration for his candidness, stating, “You’re so brave. That’s so great. I totally agree with you.” Christie recounted how they then flip to praise Trump on camera, claiming he is, “the greatest president since Abraham Lincoln.” Yet, they confide in Christie, saying, “I know, I have to do this, but I don’t think I really feel that way.”
Bill Maher probed further, asking if certain Republicans exemplified this behavior. Christie responded, “Bill, ‘Overtime’ isn’t long enough to name everyone, but I’ll name one: Lindsey Graham,” which drew surprising reactions from the audience and panel.
Fox News Digital reached out to Graham for a comment, but he had not responded at the time of the inquiry.
Christie and Trump’s relationship has been complicated. Christie backed Trump after dropping out of the 2016 race, but their dynamic changed post-2020 election when Trump refused to concede to Joe Biden. Following this, Christie criticized Trump publicly, especially in connection with the upcoming 2024 election.
As pressure mounts from other Republican lawmakers for him to bow out of the race for the 2024 presidential nomination, Christie has launched an ad campaign emphasizing his willingness to openly challenge Trump.
“Some people say I should drop out of this race. Really? I’m the only one who says Donald Trump is a liar,” he stated directly to the camera.
Christie’s campaign indicated that this advertisement kicks off a significant campaign effort targeting New Hampshire, where the primary will be held soon after the Iowa caucuses.
In the ad, Christie also accused Trump of inciting division among Americans, mentioning that the former president’s remarks to his opponents amounted to, “rots in hell.”
