New Chrome Feature Turns Web Pages into Audio Summaries
Google’s latest update for Chrome on Android offers an interesting way to consume information, especially useful when you’re busy or need a screen break. Now, with the help of Google Gemini, users can transform written web pages into brief, podcast-style audio summaries. This feature comes with two virtual hosts discussing the content, perfect for multitasking or commuting.
This upgrade enhances Chrome’s existing text-to-speech capabilities, providing a more lifelike audio delivery. Not every webpage will support this feature; some will still read back the text verbatim. Yet, when you do get the AI option, the result feels polished and engaging.
How to Try It Out on Your Android Device
To start, ensure your Chrome browser is the latest version. You can check this through the Play Store—search for Google Chrome and tap “update” if it’s available. The new AI podcast feature requires version 140.0.7339.124 or newer. After updating, open Chrome and navigate to the desired webpage.
Accessing the Feature
- Tap the other icons (three vertical dots) in the top right corner to access viewing options.
Select “Listen to This Page”
- Choose “Listen to this page.” You’ll see an audio playback banner at the bottom, ready to process quickly.
Enjoy the AI Podcast
- Your mini-podcast will begin, featuring two voices discussing the text. You can control playback, pausing or skipping as needed, and the panel will remain visible as you scroll.
Switching Back to Standard Playback
- The AI voice continues even if you leave the page. If you’d prefer the classic word-for-word reading, just tap the playback icon in the bottom left and select “Standard playback.”
Why This Matters
This new feature enhances the way we interact with lengthy articles on the go. You get quick, conversational summaries without needing to read everything. It’s also a handy tool for revisiting past information, as the controls operate like any typical audio player. If you’re into podcasts, this offers a familiar and engaging way to stay informed without requiring all your attention.
Quick Reminder
With the introduction of the AI Podcasts feature, Chrome makes browsing easier. It reduces eye strain and lets you engage with content hands-free, while still allowing a return to the classic read-aloud mode whenever you choose.
