Chuck Schumer criticizes the forceful removal of Senator Alex Padilla from the Noem press conference

Schumer Calls for Investigation into Padilla Incident

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) expressed strong outrage over the incident involving Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), who was forcibly removed from a press conference led by Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem. Schumer described the situation as reminiscent of a “totalitarian leak” and demanded an inquiry into how it occurred.

Feeling visibly frustrated, Schumer criticized the administration for failing to provide answers amid the ongoing protests in Los Angeles, emphasizing that Padilla was simply trying to gather information as a senator.

“He was thrown to the ground… a man is being treated. He was brutally removed and handcuffed. That was disgusting,” Schumer remarked. “Anyone who sees this will have their stomach turn… it reeks of totalitarianism.”

He continued, “This is not how democracy operates. Senator Padilla was completely justified in being there to find out what’s happening in California. Everyone is looking for answers. Yet, when we question the administration, we hear nothing back.”

New York Democrats are pushing for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Padilla’s handcuffing and rough removal.

“Instead, he’s met with aggression; thrown out, tossed to the ground, and handcuffed,” Schumer pointed out. “We need a complete investigation immediately. We need to find out what took place and who was responsible so we can prevent this from happening again.”

“It’s cruel; I can’t stand it. It’s so un-American,” he added. “Answers are necessary. We need them quickly.”

Padilla appeared to have confronted Noem at the beginning of the press conference, which prompted security to intervene. Although he identified himself, he was ultimately forced out and handcuffed. His office later confirmed he is no longer in custody.

Noem addressed reporters, stating she would seek to speak with Padilla about his concerns. “When I leave, I’ll have a conversation with him. I think everyone agrees that this isn’t suitable,” she remarked regarding the incident involving Padilla.

“After I finish here, I’ll locate him and genuinely hear his concerns. I think most people in America would agree that this behavior is not appropriate.”
