Chuck Todd Comments on Biden’s Debate Strategy
On a recent podcast, Chuck Todd, the former chief political analyst at NBC News, shared his belief that Joe Biden’s close advisors may have intentionally set him up for failure in a debate against Donald Trump, which he thinks could have consequences as soon as June 27, 2024.
This discussion occurred on CNN, where they reflected on the early debates during the general election. Biden’s performance was less than stellar—he seemed to struggle with his words and appeared almost frozen at times. Todd speculated that one possible reason for staging this debate was to expose Biden’s decline and make room for another candidate. It raised questions, really—why would they pick such a critical time in June to do this?
“I still hold my ground that this was intentional,” Todd stated. “If I were in their place, I would deny it too. But, honestly, what was the point of doing this so late in the game? They knew the nomination timeline and needed to manage the race appropriately.”
He added, “I realize it may seem unfair to Jen and Anita, but still…it was obvious. Reports from people like CNN’s Jake Tapper highlighted that the Biden team wasn’t acknowledging any issues. They seemed to force change only when they were under pressure.”
Anita Dunn, senior advisor to Biden, explained in a podcast why they chose to hold an early debate, aiming to shine a light on Trump’s rhetoric and policies. She acknowledged Biden’s debate performance was subpar but insisted it wasn’t as dire as some might think.
During an interview, Jen O’Malley Dillon, Biden’s campaign chair, tried to downplay the fallout from the debate, saying, “We are aware that we may have slipped a bit in the discussion, and the president knows he needs to convey his beliefs more clearly to Americans.”
Interestingly, just two days after O’Malley Dillon’s interview, Biden stepped out of the race, endorsing Kamala Harris, who faced defeat in key battleground states to Trump.
