CIA Director Dismissed Democrat Concerns About Iran

Washington Briefing Highlights CIA Director’s Remarks on Iran

During a closed-door briefing on Thursday, CIA Director John Ratcliffe took aim at Democrats by drawing comparisons between President Donald Trump’s airstrikes and former President Barack Obama’s handling of the Iranian nuclear deal. This information was relayed by sources who attended the briefing.

According to attendees, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegses, Democratic senators pressed the effectiveness of the recent military action, seeking more evidence than what was readily available. In response, Ratcliffe pointed out how lengthy negotiations with Obama had stalled progress, as recounted by those present.

“Do you know why those strikes were so effective?” Ratcliffe reportedly asked during the briefing. “Iran has been at odds with Israel for decades. While they dragged out negotiations under the Obama administration for 20 months regarding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, President Trump managed to secure a ceasefire with their adversaries in just 20 minutes.”

He also reiterated previous assertions, stating that the CIA had verified significant damage to Iran’s nuclear program as a result of the recent airstrikes. “This includes new insights from reliable sources indicating that several key Iranian nuclear facilities have been compromised and will take years to reconstruct,” Ratcliffe explained.

These revelations follow remarks from Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR), who expressed confidence in the diminished capacity of Iran’s nuclear capabilities due to the airstrikes and recent actions by Israeli military forces.

The context for Ratcliffe’s statements arises from a leak involving CNN’s Natasha Bertrand, who had previously misreported claims about Hunter Biden’s laptop, suggesting it was part of a Russian disinformation campaign. This mischaracterization faced pushback from Trump, Ratcliffe, and others in the defense and intelligence community, who argued that the initial conclusions were erroneous and that the leak was a breach of trust. There are suggestions that Congressional Democrats could be behind the leak. Furthermore, Israel’s assessment aligns with that of some U.S. officials, indicating that Iran’s nuclear ambitions may be faltering.

Ratcliffe seems to position the discussion around Obama’s failings versus Trump’s accomplishments within a heavily politicized environment. The leak, especially given Bertrand’s past inaccuracies, only adds to the turmoil, causing frustration within the White House.

Known as a credible figure in intelligence, Ratcliffe’s previous roles, including director of national intelligence during Trump’s first term, have established his reputation. His claims regarding the serious damage to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure carry weight, suggesting that he is likely conveying the truth.
