The FBI on Tuesday charged CIA officer Asif Rahman with leaking classified documents about Israel's plans to retaliate for an Iranian missile attack earlier this year.
The incident highlighted concerns that the CIA is in need of reform as critics perceive it to often operate outside the national interest.
of new york times Adam Goldman and Seamus Hughes reported Charges against Rahman, arrested by the FBI on two counts of violating the Espionage Act:
The document was produced by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, which analyzes images and information collected by U.S. reconnaissance satellites. It conducts activities in support of covert operations and military operations.
…
The information in the document is highly classified and details the interpretation of satellite images that reveal a possible Israeli attack on Iran. They started circulating on the Telegram app last month. U.S. officials have previously said they do not know where the documents were taken from and are looking for the original source of the leak.
According to court documents, Mr. Rahman holds a top-secret security guard with access to classified information, which is typical for many CIA employees who handle classified materials.
The FBI confirmed in October that it had begun investigating the breach. For detailed survey details, please refer to here.
Before Rahman's arrest, some had tried to blame Iranian-American Pentagon officials for the leaks without evidence. Jennifer Griffin of FOX News reported on these allegations as follows:
Fox News has confirmed that Asif Rahman, accused of leaking Israeli war plans, has been arrested in Cambodia and reportedly worked for the CIA rather than the Pentagon. This is a reminder that anyone who reported without evidence that Arian Tabatabai, an Iranian-American Pentagon official who worked at SOLIC, was responsible for the breach should correct the record. She has been repeatedly vilified without evidence. I reported the same thing at the time.
