CIA to reduce over 1,000 positions as Trump administration focuses on downsizing the agency: Report

The Trump administration is set to eliminate around 1,200 jobs at the Central Intelligence Agency.

Reported over the weekend, the administration intends to reduce the staffing levels across various intelligence agencies, notably the CIA, NSA, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

“These changes aim to rejuvenate the institutions, allowing new leaders to step forward and enhancing the CIA’s ability to achieve its core mission,” a source commented.

According to insiders, the reductions will predominantly occur through normal attrition methods such as early retirements and voluntary resignations, as well as a simplified hiring process.

Reports indicate that lawmakers have already been briefed on the White House’s plans.

Although specific numbers on CIA personnel remain uncertain, estimates suggest there are approximately 22,000 employees currently.

A CIA spokesperson did not verify these plans but mentioned that agency Director John Ratcliffe is “acting swiftly.”

“These efforts are part of larger strategies to inject new energy into the agencies and create pathways for emerging leaders,” she noted.

Recently, 80 probationary employees were let go, focusing especially on those involved in diversity and equity initiatives. The CIA has clarified it does not intend to introduce mass layoffs to meet its goals.

Since assuming office in January, Trump has been keen on dismantling prior initiatives related to diversity within the federal landscape.

Under the Biden administration in 2021, the CIA initiated a campaign on social media promoting recruitment efforts aimed at enhancing diversity among its agents.

One of the ads featured a candidate identifying as a “woman of color” and a “cisgender millennial” managing generalized anxiety disorder, stating, “I’m navigating through it, but my presence is not merely about filling a quota.”

Another advertisement highlighted an LGBTQ+ candidate who shared his experiences growing up in a small southern town, expressing surprise at the acceptance he found while working at the CIA.

Such recruitment ads faced significant backlash from conservatives.

Senator Ted Cruz voiced his concerns, suggesting that these approaches would intimidate adversaries like Chinese communists or Iranian leaders. “We’ve strayed far from the notion of a tough, capable CIA,” he remarked.

Donald Trump Jr. also condemned the agency’s direction, claiming that adversaries were mocking the CIA for its so-called “wokeness.” He attributed the situation to a drift towards political correctness.
