On Friday, high-ranking police officials in Cincinnati promised to release video footage related to a recent altercation that gained national attention.
Police Chief Teresa Tegge announced that additional body camera footage would be available next week. This announcement follows remarks from local faith leaders, who on Wednesday claimed they played a role in addressing the violence that erupted in the area.
The incident, dubbed the “Wild Weekend” fight, gained widespread visibility when a video surfaced showing a confrontation involving a Black suspect and two white victims.
During the press conference, Chief Tegge stated that the forthcoming footage would provide more context to the situation.
Witness Pastor Damon Lynch mentioned that prior to the clash, Black and white individuals appeared to be in a standoff. He alleged that the conflict escalated when a white man slapped another Black man, leading to a chaotic scene.
“What happened next was a significant imbalance of forces,” Lynch said, urging political leaders not to exploit the scenario for their agendas.
The Chief indicated that they are holding back some footage to protect ongoing investigations.
Reports reveal that six individuals have been charged thus far, with two men and one woman apprehended. Three additional suspects remain at large and haven’t been named yet.
Among those charged, 34-year-old Montianez Merriweather and 39-year-old Jermaine Matthews allegedly attacked the male victim, while Dekyra Vernon reportedly assaulted a woman connected to the incident.
Matthews faces multiple charges, including aggravated riot and assault, while Merriweather and Vernon have been charged with various assault-related offenses.
A photo shared by U.S. Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) illustrated the severity of the injuries sustained by the female victim, who was left with bruises, including black eyes and bloodied lips.
