Cincinnati police union stands by viral investigation of downtown assault

The Cincinnati Police Union is pushing back against local leaders who want to prosecute several white individuals involved in a violent incident downtown that left six people injured in late July.

The police union has issued a statement defending the investigation into the violence, although city leaders are calling for more arrests. The police emphasized that investigators have been thorough in gathering evidence and coordinating with prosecutors to determine appropriate charges. They expressed concern over politicians attempting to influence the investigative outcomes for their own agendas, which they see as inappropriate. Law enforcement should stay out of political maneuvering, they argued.

In a public debate, Ohio Assemblyman Cecil Thomas voiced his worries regarding the investigation’s integrity. He pointed out that the videos of the incident suggest possible bias in how the police are handling the case. Thomas stated, “The video speaks for itself,” indicating that the public’s perception of the situation may reflect underlying issues.

The union has previously characterized those involved in the street fight as “victims,” raising further questions about the ongoing narrative, according to reports from local news sources.

The incident has triggered significant public outrage, especially given the racial dynamics involved—the seven individuals arrested were all Black, which has fueled tensions in the community. Recent video footage from WLWT appears to show an unidentified white man being attacked and reportedly participating in the group violence that led to the arrests.

Another video shared by Fox News highlighted racial slurs being shouted just before the confrontation escalated, complicating the public’s perception of events. The situation has led to calls for safety measures in the city, as criticisms toward local leadership mount.

Following the July 26 assault, which occurred at the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Elm Street, the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office has not commented, reflecting the sensitive nature of the case. Some parties are questioning the fairness of the legal process as they witness the reaction from the community.

Gregory Wright, the seventh suspect, was arrested recently and is facing serious charges, including robbery. His lawyer expressed concerns about the public’s perception of Wright as a “victim,” highlighting a potential narrative issue that may affect the legal proceedings.

Amid these tensions, there have been calls for increased security at court hearings related to the case, as a precaution to maintain order. Deputy Mayor Jan Michelle Carney emphasized that those involved in the violence need to be held accountable for their actions.
