Cincinnati residents acknowledge the issue of violent crime but believe that the infamous beatdown on July 26 doesn’t solely represent their city. “I don’t think it’s accurate,” said downtown bartender Josh Pells. He noted a rise in crime, especially in the past six months, pointing out that the Over-the-Rhine area has historically been worse, but there seems to be a concerning trend in violent incidents overall.
The incident, captured on video, involved a group attacking two victims outside a popular nightclub at the corner of Elm Street. There are conflicting reports, with one angle showing a victim being assaulted while facing racial slurs. Some witnesses allege that the male victim instigated the confrontation by slapping one of the attackers.
Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Tegge confirmed six individuals had been charged, with four arrests made. The police are still searching for two other suspects involved in the attack. Resident Corey Mitchell remarked that such incidents are rare, suggesting that it was more of an “action-response” scenario rather than a representation of the city at large.
Robert Brown, a lifelong resident, agreed with Mitchell’s perspective, expressing that Cincinnati likely has fewer fights than many other cities and attributing the media attention to social media’s reach. Despite acknowledging the brutality of the incident, he commented on the actions leading up to the fight, saying, “all the extras after the smack were really not justified.”
Shirley Blair shared her shock after witnessing the fight online, pondering what could have led to such violence. She expressed concern about the potential for escalation and hoped for dialogue to address the underlying tensions.
Local authorities, including the police and the FBI, continue to investigate the brawl. Mayor Aftab Pureval warned of increasing consequences for everyone involved. Montianez Merriweather and Dekyra Vernon were arrested on serious charges, with one held on a $500,000 bond. Meanwhile, a third suspect, Germaine Matthews, was recently released after making bond on multiple charges linked to the altercation.
Lastly, Dominique Kittle was arrested on charges related to the riot, while his attorney noted he suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. As the situation unfolds, the community remains on edge, hoping for resolution and understanding.
