Celebration at Military Parade Draws Participants Nationwide
This past Saturday, a military parade in the nation’s capital featured attendees from all over the United States. Conversations with some of these participants revealed their motivations for attending this special event.
While several were locals, many others traveled long distances to join the celebration of the Army’s 250th anniversary. Interestingly, the date also coincides with Flag Day, which commemorates the adoption of the American flag, and is also the birthday of former President Donald Trump.
“For me, this is a sense of patriotism,” shared a participant from the Baltimore area. “We’re celebrating both the Army’s anniversary and Flag Day. Plus, it’s Trump’s birthday, which is a nice coincidence.”
Attendees expressed their desire to honor the troops but many also voiced their support for Trump. One Florida resident, who made the trip to Washington, noted, “With a president like Donald Trump, who truly admires our military, we feel there’s little time left to come to DC and show our support.”
Another visitor from northern Kentucky added, “We’re very patriotic, so it’s great to come here and enjoy the day. And yes, it’s Trump’s birthday, which is an added bonus.”
Veterans were also present at the parade. “I thought this might be my last chance to see an event like this,” mentioned a 30-year Army veteran. Another veteran simply stated, “It was the Army celebration that brought me here,” when asked about traveling from Ann Arbor, Michigan.
While there was a significant pro-Trump presence within the parade, some anti-Trump sentiments were also noticeable, although these individuals were primarily found outside the event. One attendee who identified as anti-Trump remarked, “This has been one of several protests since he took office. It seems more like he’s trying to showcase himself than actually celebrating the Army. It feels wrong to put the military on display like that.”
