City worker dies, two hurt in boat explosion involving raw sewage on Hudson River

Explosive Incident on Hudson River

A worker has died, and two others were injured following a live sewer explosion on the Hudson River on Saturday morning. The incident occurred shortly after 10:30 AM on the city-owned vessel Hunts Point, which is utilized for transporting sewage to treatment facilities, as reported by David Sims, deputy assistant chief at the Fire Department of New York (FDNY).

Upon arrival, emergency crews found a significant explosion within one of the ship’s tanks. Unfortunately, one of the employees was blown away from the force of the blast that occurred between the pier and the ship. Although firefighters attempted a technical removal to rescue the worker, it was too late.

While two employees survived the explosion, one was taken to a hospital for treatment. The condition of the hospitalized employee has not been disclosed, and another employee declined medical attention.

Officials confirmed that the deceased employee was part of the New York City Environmental Protection Bureau and had been docked at the North River Wastewater Resources Recovery Facility in West Harlem at the time of the explosion.

Due to the nature of the incident, the ship’s deck was contaminated with raw sewage, necessitating decontamination procedures for all responding FDNY personnel. Sims mentioned that multiple units were deployed to the scene, including three fire engines, two ladder companies, and various specialist teams.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet determined if the explosion was accidental. Chairman Rohit T. Aggarwala expressed sorrow over the incident, highlighting that the lost employee had dedicated 33 years of service to the department and community, emphasizing their invaluable experience and commitment.

Despite the explosion, the plant’s operations appear unaffected, and there has been no significant environmental damage reported.
