Ciudad Juarez Airport Shooting Tied to Human Smuggling Turf War

The recent shooting at Ciudad Juárez Airport, in which two men were killed, was directly linked to a turf war between smuggling rings. These organizations continue to fight to control the arrival of migrants attempting to reach the Texas border.

The shooting occurred Friday night at the airport in Ciudad Juarez, a Mexican border city just south of El Paso, Texas. This area is known as a drug and human smuggling route into Texas. Unidentified gunmen shot dead two men riding in separate vehicles. One of the men tried to flee in a car, but the gunmen caught up with him and shot him with rifle-caliber bullets.

according to El Diario de Juarez, that shooting incident and another similar incident earlier this year are related to an apparent turf war for control of the “Airport Plaza.” Plaza is colloquially used to refer to a lawn used by organized crime for various illegal activities. Local news outlets quoted federal law enforcement officials as saying,Poleros”, meaning human smugglers are behind the turf war.

As Breitbart Texas reported, human smugglers with ties to cartels control the flow of migrants, including asylum seekers. In cities such as Reynosa, Tamaulipas, the cartel has operators stationed at airports and bus stops to pick up migrants and transport them to hiding places and other locations. These cartel operators in Reynosa operate without interference from Mexican federal authorities.

In many cases, corruption investigators at Mexico’s National Immigration Institute cooperate with smugglers by giving them permits or paying them preferential treatment, Breitbart Texas reported.
