Scheinbaum, a climate scientist and former Mexico City mayor, won 58.3% and 60.7% of the vote, respectively, according to the statistical sample used for the preliminary tally.
The head of the National Electoral Commission reported that her opponent, Xochitl Gálvez (female), received 26.6 to 28.6 percent of the vote, while Jorge Álvarez Mines received 9.9 to 10.8 percent.
“For the first time in 200 years of our republic, I will be the first woman president. But as I have said on other occasions, I did not do it alone. We all did it, along with the heroines, the mothers, the daughters and granddaughters who gave us our country,” Scheinbaum told supporters.
Outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador praised Scheinbaum’s historic victory in a video released early Monday.
“I congratulate Claudia Scheinbaum on her landslide victory, which will see Mexico elect its first female president in 200 years,” he said.
“president [Sheinbaum] “Probably the most votes in the history of our country,” he added.
Scheinbaum, 61, will begin his six-year term on Oct. 1.st.
“I will be the first woman president of Mexico,” Sheinbaum said at a downtown Mexico City hotel shortly after her election victory was announced.
“I did not succeed alone, we all did, together with the heroines who gave us our country, my mother, my daughters, my granddaughters,” she added. “We have proven that Mexico is a democratic country with peaceful elections.”
Sheinbaum was named as his successor by outgoing President Manuel Lopez Obrador, meaning he will continue the president’s legacy.
Scheinbaum is also a leftist, opposes economic inequality, and supports government intervention in society.
