Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Responds to Claims of Election Interference
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed a recent claim made by Peter Schweitzer regarding Mexico’s alleged use of its consulates to influence U.S. elections. At a Thursday press conference, Sheinbaum chose not to name Schweitzer, referring to him vaguely as “the guy who wrote the book.” She firmly denied any involvement of Mexican consulates in U.S. electoral matters.
“Yesterday, the Office of Foreign Affairs released a statement regarding someone who wrote a book claiming we are engaged in political actions through our consulates in the U.S.,” Sheinbaum stated.
This assertion is completely inaccurate. The role of consulates is defined by international law, primarily to offer protection and support to Mexican nationals residing in the United States. That’s their fundamental purpose.
We categorically reject the notion that they are involved in U.S. politics. We hold a deep respect for the principle of non-intervention, and we expect other nations to do the same.
Sheinbaum also attempted to separate Schweitzer from former President Donald Trump, insisting that, despite Trump’s endorsement, “this is an individual who has no ties to President Trump’s administration.” However, she encouraged Americans to explore Schweitzer’s book.
Schweitzer, in his book, accuses the Mexican government of working with U.S. political advisers to interfere in domestic politics, aiming to leverage both legal and illegal immigrants in the U.S. as political tools for their own agenda.
Going further, he noted that former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (often referred to as AMLO) had previously toured U.S. cities in February 2017, rallying Mexican immigrants against Trump’s border policies, which he claimed disproportionately affected drug cartels targeted by strict immigration enforcement.
Schweitzer also noted that AMLO proposed transforming Mexico’s consulate into an office focused on immigration defense, a move he argued represented an extraordinary level of advocacy from a foreign leader against a sitting U.S. president.
“AMLO wasn’t merely advocating for immigration legal battles—he was actively pushing for electoral change in the United States,” Schweitzer remarked. He emphasized that such blatant interference in American politics by a foreign leader was unprecedented, particularly from a nation that isn’t at war with the U.S.
