Clay Matthews’ Hilarious Draft Moment
Last month at the NFL Draft in Green Bay, former Packers linebacker Clay Matthews pulled off a funny stunt. At 38, he took to the stage alongside other Packers legends and rapper Lil Wayne. As he addressed the crowd, he claimed to have a “message” from President Donald Trump.
“I just got off the phone with President Trump,” he began, before going on to read a cheeky note that said, “My fellow Americans, the bear still sucks!” This playful jab got a great reaction from the crowd in Green Bay and made waves on social media.
Matthews came up with the idea after watching last year’s draft featuring Calvin Johnson and others. He appreciated the energy and wanted to do something memorable when it was his turn. He even got his wife’s approval before presenting what he humorously claimed was Trump’s message.
Interestingly, he decided not to inform the NFL about his stunt, suspecting it wouldn’t go over well given the political climate. “I figured they wouldn’t approve it, especially with mentions of politics,” he said. Behind the scenes, he felt nervous, unsure about how NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell would react.
When it was time, though, everything went smoothly, and he felt pleased with the execution. He was relieved that the rest of the former players enjoyed it too. Although he anticipated some backlash from Goodell, it turns out the commissioner was quite relaxed about the situation, even asking for a photo of the letter for social media.
Matthews joked afterward that, while the stunt was a hit, he might not get invited to do something similar in the future.
