Clayton Dietz, charged with the murder of his adoptive father, brought into court in handcuffs

Eleven-Year-Old Accused of Killing Adoptive Father

An 11-year-old boy, seemingly innocent with his baby face, was escorted into a courtroom in handcuffs on Thursday. Clayton Dietz faces charges as an adult for the alleged homicide of his adoptive father, Douglas Dietz, which happened on January 13—coincidentally, the boy’s birthday—at their home in Duncannon, Pennsylvania, located north of Harrisburg.

Video footage captured the moment when the bespectacled child stumbled slightly upon entering the Perry County Courthouse, flanked by probation officers. It’s a rather jarring sight, to be honest.

Prosecutors claim that Clayton, who was adopted in 2018, shot his father, aged 42, with a revolver he discovered in a safe at their home. It’s reported that the boy found the key while trying to recover a gaming console that his parents had taken away and locked alongside the firearm.

When police arrived at the scene around 3:20 a.m., they discovered Clayton in distress, shouting about an accident. According to court documents, he told his mother, “I killed him,” and was heard crying, “My daddy is dead.”

The affidavit details an alarming confession: Clayton admitted to opening the gun safe, loading the gun, and approaching his father’s bedside before firing. The situation escalated quickly, leaving everyone shocked.

After the incident, when questioned by the police about what he thought would happen if he fired the weapon, the boy’s response hinted at a lack of understanding. He reportedly said, “I was crazy and didn’t think about what was going to happen.”

Meanwhile, Mrs. Dietz recounted a terrifying experience when she was jolted awake by a loud bang and an unusual smell reminiscent of fireworks. When she roused her husband, he lay motionless, and she distinctly recalls a sound that initially seemed innocuous but turned out to be her husband’s blood dripping onto the sheets. It’s haunting, really.
