Clayton Kershaw, the Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher, was spotted wearing a baseball cap featuring biblical verses, which sparked a variety of responses regarding his Christian beliefs.
A photo circulated online showing Kershaw in a blue pride-themed hat inscribed with verses from Genesis 9:12-16.
In the scripture, God makes a covenant symbolized by a rainbow, promising never to destroy life again:
“And God said, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that you are making between me and you, between you and all living creatures with you… I have placed a rainbow in the cloud. It is the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.’”
Responses varied widely. Some noted that it takes “courage” to express your faith, especially when your career is at stake, while others expressed gratitude to Kershaw for “reminding everyone that the rainbow signifies hope.”
One individual commented that in a culture challenging one’s beliefs, Kershaw is an example to follow, saying, “One of my favorite pitchers. One of my favorite Christian athletes.”
“Bass,” tweeted conservative commentator Liz Wheeler.
Another user remarked that Kershaw represents the “only good thing about the Dodgers.” Someone else highlighted the “true courage of today’s world” in his actions.
One person mentioned their gratitude that Kershaw clarified the meaning behind the rainbow, stating they were not a Dodgers fan but appreciated the message being shared.
Conversely, some criticized his actions, dismissing them as “the actions of the loser,” emphasizing that rainbows result from light refraction. A different response argued that rainbows have various meanings and questioned why they couldn’t symbolize multiple things.
In May 2023, reports surfaced indicating that Kershaw opposed the inclusion of certain groups at a Dodgers event, urging management to expedite the announcement for a Christian Faith and Family Day.
