Cleveland Clinic Agrees to $2 Million for Detransition Care
Cleveland Clinic has decided to allocate $2 million for detransition care as part of a settlement with the Department of Justice. This resolves accusations that the hospital filed incorrect insurance claims related to gender-related medical treatments for minors.
The announcement made on June 5 indicates that Cleveland Clinic is required to pay $308,000 concerning the billing allegations while designating $2 million specifically for what the Justice Department refers to as “restorative care” for those who have transitioned.
“We are pleased to work together to resolve an unintentional coding issue involving a small number of our patients,” the Cleveland Clinic stated, emphasizing their dedication to providing exceptional care and compliance with all relevant laws.
The clinic also mentioned that they are already providing transitional care to any patients who request it.
A recent press release from the Justice Department pointed out that this settlement comes shortly after Texas Children’s Hospital agreed to a $10 million penalty for similar infractions, which included billing Medicaid for “unacceptable and illegal ‘gender reassignment’ interventions.”
“These historic efforts combine an end to dangerous practices masquerading as medical care with significant investments to repair the destruction they cause,” states the release.
In working toward this resolution, the U.S. recognized Cleveland Clinic’s cooperation throughout the investigation. “Cleveland Clinic remained cooperative, proactive, and solution-driven,” the Justice Department noted.
Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate expressed gratitude for institutions like Cleveland Clinic opting to contribute to the solution rather than being part of the problem. He further stated that their commitment to support transition-related care is a step forward, but emphasized that efforts to protect vulnerable children would continue.
