Cleveland Fire Chief Placed on Leave After Controversial Posts
The chief of the Cleveland Fire Department has been put on paid administrative leave following the posting of what has been described as “insensitive” and “inflammatory” remarks on social media. Mayor Justin Bibb announced this decision on Tuesday after the aftermath of the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk.
In a Facebook update, Anthony P. Luke referenced Kirk and included a cartoon depicting an elephant worshiping another elephant, urging followers with the phrase “Take the next sacrifice!” This post surfaced on Luke’s personal Facebook account shortly after Kirk, a 31-year-old father of two, was fatally shot during an event at a university in Utah on September 10th.
Mayor Bibb expressed concern, stating that the post “crossed the line.” He emphasized that gun violence should not be trivialized. Bibb noted, “This is a very serious problem in a city that mourns many families every week, with lives cut short and children not feeling safe at home.”
While he underscored the importance of free speech and the First Amendment, Bibb highlighted that public safety authorities hold a higher standard and should act responsibly. “Public safety leaders, in particular, are not just ordinary citizens,” he remarked.
Bibb concluded that Luke’s actions failed to represent the community’s values of compassion, unity, and safety, insisting that Luke would remain on paid administrative leave as they address the situation. Luke has been serving as the city’s 17th Fire Chief.
