Climate activists arrested after disrupting Massachusetts airstrip

A group of environmental activists were arrested Saturday after blocking traffic at an airfield in Massachusetts, the latest in an ongoing trend of public demonstrations against climate change.

About 20 protesters from the environmental activist group Extinction Rebellion were arrested by police and taken into custody at Lawrence G. Hanscom Field in Bedford.

Activists stood in the path of the plane during a taxi ride to “resist the planned expansion of 17 new hangars that would increase private jet services by 300%.”

The group said Hanscom Field’s expansion would contribute to global climate change and set back environmental efforts in the state.

In a press release after the demonstration and arrest, Extinction Rebellion said, “The projected carbon footprint of private jet flights exceeds the climate change benefits of all the solar power installed in Massachusetts by 70%. % will be canceled out.”

Local reports said some people intercepted planes while taxiing, while others placed themselves in front of the entrances of Signature Aviation, Jet Aviation and Atlantic Aviation.

“Extinction Rebellion condemns new fossil fuel infrastructure that has been in operation for decades, hindering the achievement of decarbonization and threatening runaway global warming and an uninhabitable planet.” said the group.

The group specifically called on Gov. Maura Healey to oppose the airfield’s planned hangar expansion.

“Extinction Rebellion calls on Governor Maura Healey to publicly oppose the expansion of Hanscom Airfield and any expansion of civilian airfields for the ultra-wealthy,” the group said.
