Climate activists glue themselves to runway at Munich airport in Germany

A group of climate change protesters have been arrested in Germany after they invaded an airport and staked themselves on the runway.

Six activists broke through a security barrier at Munich Airport in Bavaria, Germany, on Saturday, according to news agency dpa.

Approximately 60 flights were canceled and authorities were forced to temporarily close the airport as 60 protesters staked out on the tarmac.

An additional 14 flights bound for Munich were forced to divert to other nearby airports to avoid disruption.

Last Generation climate change protest coalition took credit for the stunt, saying it was aimed at drawing attention to the German government’s inaction on the environmental impact of aviation.

All six protesters were arrested and charged by law enforcement.

“Encroachment into an aviation security zone is not a simple crime. More than hundreds of thousands of passengers were prevented from having a relaxing and punctual start to their Whit holiday,” said General Manager of the German Airports Association. Ralph Beisel told DPA.

German Interior Minister Nancy Feser said of the protests on social media platform X: “Such criminal acts only cause a lack of understanding and anger, threaten air traffic and undermine climate protection.” I wrote.

The Munich incident is just one of similar protests against air transport around the world. Last Generation has carried out at least two similar airport disruptions in Germany since last year.
