Climber Survives 500-Foot Fall in Sierra Nevada

A climber is incredibly fortunate after enduring a frightening 500-foot drop in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, followed by a tough night stuck on the mountainside.

The California Highway Patrol’s Inland Air Operations reported that the climber, who was hiking with his brother near Mount Baxter in Kings Canyon National Park, lost his balance while navigating a steep, snowy slope and fell around 500 feet.

Miraculously, he survived the fall, sustaining multiple broken bones but, thankfully, no serious injuries.

Officials said the climber came to rest on a steep ledge and sustained several injuries. The situation quickly became dire.

His brother rushed down to him but found himself unable to move due to the challenging terrain at about 12,400 feet. The area was rocky and covered in snow, making it impossible to safely climb up or down.

With no options left, the brothers had to shelter in place and wait.

They managed to contact rescuers using a Garmin inReach satellite device, but help was delayed. Ground rescue was unfeasible due to the rough landscape, and darkness loomed.

As temperatures dipped into the teens, the brothers spent a frigid night on the narrow ledge.

By morning, a CHP helicopter could finally reach them, but the rescue was anything but routine.

Rescuers had to perform risky hoisting operations at high altitudes with strong winds. One rescuer was lowered onto the precarious ledge where the climbers rested, forcing a meticulous approach to safely extract them.

This entire operation was challenging, and even experienced rescuers deemed the situation particularly strenuous. “This is probably the most difficult hoist I’ve had to do,” remarked Flight Officer Paramedic Gustavo Aguirre. “We had to be very careful…time is of the essence.”

Eventually, both climbers were airlifted to safety and transported to a local hospital. While their identities remain confidential, it’s reported they are recovering well.

It truly feels like a miracle that he made it through this ordeal.
